Girl Eats World // 嘴大吃四方

Dazui: Chinese for "Big Mouth".

I had a disproportionally large mouth for the first 13 years of my life. To comfort me, my mom always said, "don't worry, because 嘴大吃四方 (translation: if you have a big mouth, you can eat the four corners of the world)." Luckily my facial features evened themselves out over time, but I'd like to think that it is my "dazui" that has allowed me to eat my way across various countries, learning about culture through food.

Send me a tip at housegf@gmail.com and let me know what/where I should eat next. :)

I don’t get football; but I DO get Snack-adiums and chicken wing cupcakes!

Superbowl Supersnacks at my sister’s house in New York- Mindy wanted to make a snack-adium, and then I forced her into making these cornbread cupcakes (with blue cheese & honey frosting and a chicken wing on top!) for me, inspired by this article .

I was really sad today because my boyfriend was eating 小笼灌汤包(soup dumplings) in Shanghai without me. I don’t know if I was more sad about my boyfriend being in Shanghai or about missing out on the soup dumplings. Anyway, I did the next best thing I could think of, which is driving out to Flushing, Queens and eating at Joe’s Shanghai. Flushing is basically like China anyways, and the dumplings at Joe’s, in my opinion, are the best in the US. I’ve tried Din Tai Fung, Shanghai Cafe Deluxe, Shanghai Asian Cuisine, Joe’s Shanghai in Manhattan, plus many other restaurants in bigger cities like NYC and LA, but Joe’s in Flushing just has a special place in my heart and stomach, even with your “B” health code rating.

If you think you know of a better place for 小笼包, please let me know. Better yet, buy me some and feed them to me.

Costa Rican cereal… I wish I could eat Glacs for breakfast every morning. It is clearly the choice for winners.

Later 2011, you’ve been good to my stomach & taste buds. My New Year’s resolution is to eat my way around 6 countries in 2012. Oh and go to the gym (less committed to this one)!

This is a Monte Cristo sandwich from Brad’s Bar & Grill in Ellettsville, Indiana. It’s a double decker ham, turkey and cheese sandwich, battered & deep fried, then smothered in strawberry jam and powdered sugar. It also came with an entire plate of greasy fries. Why? Because this is America, and we all have heart disease.

Took my mom to her doctor’s appointment at Cleveland Clinic today; everything turned out to be fine, so to celebrate, we went to Wild Mango, a restaurant recommended by some family friends living in West Lake. Decent Asian fusion, my favorite dish was the Southeast Asia style shellfish bouillabaisse with clams, mussels, shrimp and scallops in a spicy coconut-curry lemongrass broth, oyster mushroom, bean sprouts, baby bok choy and rice pasta.

The five-spiced roast duck with spicy Japanese eggplant, mashed sweet potato and roasted chestnut was medium rare, which threw me off a bit because I didn’t know duck break could be medium rare; the fried baby calamari with sweet chili sauce and cilantro oil encased in fried wonton tortilla was a really small portion and did not leave an impression with me, but the seared tuna(rare) with seared sea scallops in a ginger-tomato broth and mango-tomato risotto was absolutely delicious.

We made a true Chinese American style Thanksgiving dinner at Casa Chen, 15 dishes ranging from stuffing casserole to roasted duck to brussel sprouts to wasabi spinach to candied yams to braised pig’s feet to of course, a big ass turkey. But this is not why I’m posting this photo; the real purpose of this post is to discuss why my boyfriend’s hair looks like a helmet.

Da Dong Kao Ya 大董烤鸭
On Set of “Wok-N-Roll”

Before leaving Beijing this summer I had a chance to support my friend Kyle’s pilot shoot for his new food show for Blue Ocean Network, called “Wok-N-Roll”. We went to Beijing’s famed Da Dong Roasted Duck restaurant, the same one that Kyle and I ate at nearly three years ago during the 08’ Olympics. I remember being amazed back then that Kyle could eat an entire duck by himself while I could barely split one with another person. This time around, he’s getting paid to do it. Keep up the good work, buddy! Watch the episode related to this entry here: http://bon.tv/12/123/6430-wok-n-roll-episode-1-da-dong.shtml
